First Weeks

Last week was orientation week which meant lots of talking about what to expect. Brian came home every day saying why can't we just get started already (he was a little excited). Well Tuesday classes officially started and the huge amounts of reading have begun. One class meets 3x a week  (all in a row) and you have to read 40 pages prior to each class on average... yikees! So far our schedules are jiving, I drop him off across the street from work at the train station then go to work, and then pick him up when I get off work. That may be changing as the reading piles up but if it does I will just go home start dinner and then pick him up or drop him off early and then hit the gym before work, either way our plan seems to be working :) So far it does not seem like he will have late nights on a regular basis which is nice! He has met several other 1 year law students that take the train in to SLC so they have talked about going in on an earlier train together so that they can study prior to class rather than after. Most of them are also married so I think they would rather start their days early and get home to their families :)

The hardest thing they say about the first year is the language. There are a lot of new terms to learn. Many of them are of Latin origin so Brian has been having fun playing a game with himself, there is a book for one of his classes that has the term in Latin then later defines it. He likes to try and figure it out and then reads the definition to see if he is right. I think the combination of knowing multiple languages and the ability to pick up on new ones with ease is helping him, and maybe all those law shows we watched got him familiar with the terms too ;)

So far he is just having fun, I am sure some days he will feel overwhelmed but for now he is just excited to be learning.

We had dinner the other night at the Natural History Museum, it was gorgeous, there was a balcony on the roof and this was out view. Absolutely stunning. It views like this that remind me of Utah's beauty. Sometimes the lack of color makes me forget.

Brian on his first day of law school.

Us at the Swearing in Ceremony.

The swearing in ceremony was so much fun. All the new students were there. U of U has a relatively small class size. Brian's class this year is around 100 students and I believe it is actually in the 90 range now. This is a big reason why we picked the school we loved the idea of a low professor to student ratio. Well they were all there and we heard from a local Judge for a bit and she talked about what lawyers should represent and a few encouraging words as they all start out on this journey, then after that they all stood and raised their right hand and repeated an oath. It was so amazing to see them all together take part in this. I am so proud of Brian and all his hard work and all the hard work yet to come. I am so excited that he is loving it all more than he ever thought he would, a year ago when he spontaneously decided to go to law school I was skeptical but chose to be supportive regardless and he has been surprising me ever since! That boy sure can accomplish a lot when he puts his mind to it.
